Letter To Erin<\/h3>\n

You asked about my most terrifying day of fishing.\u00a0 I will tell you, but first, let me tell you why.<\/p>\n

I have fished every Upper Cook Inlet salmon season of my life.\u00a0 Forty-five years, minus however long I was in diapers.\u00a0 I have never lived without fishing.\u00a0 I have never lived without fish.<\/p>\n

Seasons have been bountiful.\u00a0 Nets sunk.\u00a0 Fighting against wind and tide and regulations to get our gear in on time.\u00a0 Long hours spent bent over picking sockeye after sockeye until my hands were sore, my back was sore, my being was sore \u2014 and I smiled.\u00a0 It was the best kind of sore.<\/p>\n

Seasons have been bleak.\u00a0 Waterhauls and a narrative running from, \u201cit\u2019s still early,\u201d to \u201ceverything is running late this year,\u201d to \u201cwell, there\u2019s always next year.\u201d<\/p>\n

Good years or bad, it has all been satisfying.\u00a0 Fishing is not just something I do, it is who I am.\u00a0 It is my passion.\u00a0 And my identity.<\/p>\n

Political pressures grew along with the population.\u00a0 Our voice doesn\u2019t carry.\u00a0 What does this one little fishery matter?\u00a0 But to those of us who grew up in it, those whose families have fished these beaches since the Territorial days of Alaska, it seems like everything.<\/p>\n

Most of us work other jobs in the off-season.\u00a0 I strove to become a veterinarian, and it is a profession I am extremely proud of.\u00a0 I love my work, yet here is the difference.\u00a0 I became a veterinarian.\u00a0 I was born a fisherman.\u00a0 People ask what it is like, being a woman commercial fisherman.\u00a0 I tell them I don\u2019t know.\u00a0 I am not trying to be cryptic; the truth is, I knew I was a fisherman before I knew I was a woman.<\/p>\n

I am not naive.\u00a0 I see the handwriting on the wall.\u00a0 One of these days, my fishery will merely be a small anecdote in Alaskan history<\/a>.<\/p>\n

My most terrifying day of fishing hasn\u2019t happened yet.\u00a0 But I fear it is close.\u00a0 The day they close our fishery, the day I have to figure out who I am when I am not a fisherman\u2026 That will be my most terrifying day.<\/p>\n
