{"id":7644,"date":"2013-11-26T17:57:39","date_gmt":"2013-11-27T02:57:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/aksalmonalliance.org\/staging1\/?p=7644"},"modified":"2013-11-26T17:57:39","modified_gmt":"2013-11-27T02:57:39","slug":"response-to-craig-medred-set-net-bycatch-article","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/aksalmonalliance.org\/staging1\/2013\/11\/26\/response-to-craig-medred-set-net-bycatch-article\/","title":{"rendered":"Response to Craig Medred, Set net bycatch article"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>This letter was provided to the Alaska Salmon Alliance by its author prior to being printed in the Alaska Dispatch (to which it is addressed) or any other entity.\u00a0 Thus, it has been reproduced in full here.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Dear Dispatch,<\/p>\n<p>I am supremely disappointed in the article you ran on November 20<sup>th<\/sup> by Craig Medred.\u00a0 It is riddled with misinformation and is very unprofessional.\u00a0 I would hope a fisheries article would warrant a call to 1 or 2 fisheries biologists or at least a trip to the ADF&amp;G web page (as much of this information is covered there).\u00a0 Even the title \u2018What exactly is the impact of setnet bycatch on Alaska\u2019s Kenai River King salmon fishery?\u2019\u00a0 is inaccurate.\u00a0 Legal historic harvest is NOT bycatch.\u00a0 The Alaska Journal of Commerce covers this pretty well.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alaskajournal.com\/Alaska-Journal-of-Commerce\/November-Issue-3-2013\/AJOC-EDITORIAL-Legal-historic-harvest-is-not-bycatch\/\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.alaskajournal.com\/<wbr \/>Alaska-Journal-of-Commerce\/<wbr \/>November-Issue-3-2013\/AJOC-<wbr \/>EDITORIAL-Legal-historic-<wbr \/>harvest-is-not-bycatch\/<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, ADF&amp;G came up with the exploitation rate of 13% it is not a \u2018claim\u2019 of the Kenai Peninsula Fishermen\u2019s Association.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a link<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adfg.alaska.gov\/static\/regulations\/regprocess\/fisheriesboard\/ucitaskforce\/pdfs\/laterun_exploitationrates.pdfIn\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.adfg.alaska.gov\/<wbr \/>static\/regulations\/regprocess\/<wbr \/>fisheriesboard\/ucitaskforce\/<wbr \/>pdfs\/laterun_<wbr \/>exploitationrates.pdfIn<\/a> Then there is the eluded dishonesty of setnetters.\u00a0 Any commercial catch that I keep for personal use or sell for cash IS reflected on my commercial fish ticket.\u00a0 There is a spot on the bottom that I am legally and morally required to fill out.\u00a0 My family and I do harvest a few fish that we process and eat over the winter.\u00a0 \u00a0ALL the fish I take (Reds, Kings or otherwise) are marked on my commercial ticket.<\/p>\n<p>Not only is the word \u2018bycatch\u2019 repeatedly misused throughout the article, the statement \u2018The incentive for setnetters to make bycatch disappear in this way is huge\u2019 is insulting and false.\u00a0 Setnetting is one of the most historically accurate inseason indicators for Kenai king salmon run strength.\u00a0 Why would we want a lesser run to look weak?\u00a0 Again no fact, simply slander.<\/p>\n<p>The article then mentions saltwater rearing as a culprit for low returns, but fails to credit density dependent factors as mentioned in the Kenai Chinook Salmon Escapement goal report (Page 14).\u00a0 Currently, there are no smolt studies on the Kenai River.\u00a0 How can one claim \u2018rivers appear to be producing adequate numbers of small salmon?\u2019\u00a0 No one is checking!<\/p>\n<p>To my knowledge, the final king escapement numbers are not out.\u00a0 However, in 2010 the Kenai King escapement was around 16,000.\u00a0 The claim that 2013 was the first time the number of spawners has dropped below 20,000 is wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Please look at a the Kenai King MSY chart.\u00a0 We know from ADF&amp;G data that 13,000-28,000 spawners is 90% of MSY.\u00a0 It brings back highest future returns.\u00a0 More kings, everyone is happy!! Hooray!<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the Kenai king goal was not lowered.\u00a0 It was converted to new units of measure.\u00a0 It is like comparing apples to oranges.\u00a0 ADF&amp;G explain it to me as switching from MPH to KPH.\u00a0 The units are different, but the speed (and the number of fish) is the same.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.adfg.alaska.gov\/index.cfm?adfg=ucitaskforce.datarequests#7\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.adfg.alaska.gov\/<wbr \/>index.cfm?adfg=ucitaskforce.<wbr \/>datarequests#7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many of these fish facts are covered on the ADF&amp;G UCI Task Force page.\u00a0 I have included it above.<\/p>\n<p>I have yet to hear of the 42% mortality rate claimed in this article, and I have been paying attention.\u00a0 Undoubtedly, this too is false.\u00a0 All credibility has been lost.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know who I am more disappointed in, Mr. Medred for writing this and calling it an article or The Dispatch for printing it.<\/p>\n<p>If you would like to study true biological research of kings in Alaska, there is a new study published on the kings of the Yukon\/Kuskokwim, you should check it out.\u00a0 At the very least read the Kenai Chinook Interim Escapement Goal Report.<\/p>\n<p>These ARE tough times for the Alaskan families that live and love to work the beaches of Cook Inlet. \u00a0We have to fight misinformation spewing from special interests, lobbying groups and now \u2018credible\u2019 news sources.\u00a0 This article represents neither the news nor the voices of the last frontier.<\/p>\n<p>I am a wife, mother and fisherman living on the Kenai Peninsula.\u00a0 As an Alaskan resident, I deserve better than this.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you,<\/p>\n<p>Megan Smith<br \/>\n<a href=\"tel:907-283-0210\" target=\"_blank\">907-283-0210<\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Because the Alaska Salmon Alliance wishes to provide a wide breadth of information, we sometimes provide links and documents that may conflict or present only one perspective on an issue.\u00a0 Because of that, we feel it is important to note that none of the content provided on our website necessarily represents the views or opinions of the Alaska Salmon Alliance, excepting, of course, those articles authored by us.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This letter was provided to the Alaska Salmon Alliance by its author prior to being printed in the Alaska Dispatch (to which it is addressed) or any other entity.\u00a0 Thus, it has been reproduced in full here.
